Chapter 17
The look of utter horror on Saskiaâs face would haunt Cloverâs dreams for years to come. She never wished for her friend to see this. Their relationship was already fractured, but this would break them.
I must look like a monster to her.
âWhat are you doing?â Saskia demanded.
âSheâs trying to kill me,â Rose wailed. âSheâs gone mad...â
Saskia walked towards Clover, her hands held out in a placating gesture. Clover felt sick. Her best friend thought she was a killer, a murderer. Is that how she looked right now, a crazed person?
Clover caught her reflection in the window and gasped. Her hair was a mess and her face was covered in sweat. Her eyes were scrunched up with hate and her mouth was twisted.
What have I become?
She looked at her sword, at the blood dripping from its end. She looked at Rose, her shoulder bleeding, her eyes full of fear. Clover suddenly realized she didnât want vengeance anymore, not if it was going to turn her into something so twisted with hatred. She didnât want to be a monster.
But what about Rose? She couldnât be allowed to get away with what sheâd done. There had to be justice for her parents.
âWill someone fucking tell me whatâs going on?â Saskia demanded. Her eyes bore into Clover. âIsnât it enough that you slept with Adrian? Now you have to try and kill my mother? What kind of sick freak are you?â
âThis can all be explained,â said Clover.
Rose pulled herself to her feet, leaving splashes of blood on the kitchen tiles. She looked on the verge of passing out.
âShe came in with that sword, ranting and raving,â said Rose, walking towards her daughter unsteadily. âShe tried to kill me and she wouldâve succeeded if you hadnât walked in. Run, Saskia; run and get the sheriff.â
Saskia didnât move an inch. Clover knew her friend was smart enough not to believe everything she saw. Sheâd ask questions.
âIâm not sure what to believe,â Saskia admitted.
âWell?â Rose demanded. âClover, are you going to stand there and tell lies or are you going to admit the truth?â
Clover dropped the sword, suddenly wishing sheâd never started training to use the thing.
âItâs true,â said Clover. âI did try to kill your mother.â
Saskia gasped. âNo...â
âBut you know me,â Clover pleaded. âI wouldnât do it unless I had a very good reason, and believe me I had a very, very good reason.â
Rose laughed. âAnd what reason did you have?â
Clover felt cornered. On the one hand, she could explain and have Saskia think she was insane. On the other, she could lie and end up looking insane. Either way, she wouldnât come out of this looking good.
No, I donât get to think of myself now. Saskia deserves to know the truth about what a monster her mother really is. Perhaps thatâs the best way of punishing Rose, making her own daughter despise her?
Clover looked Saskia in the eyes and said, âYour mother cursed my parents. Sheâs a witch.â
Saskia looked from her mother to Clover and back again, speechless.
